The Il-Khan: Location and Achievments

• Located in the Middle East, comprised of Anatolia, Mesopotamia, and the Persian/Iranian Plateau.
• Conquered by Hulegu, starting in 1256 and ending in 1335 (the shortest of all khanates).
• Established an alliance between Mongols and Persians (they provide opportunities for the Persians to help them rule their realm in the Il-Khan. Mongols provide Persians with encouragement of intellectuals, artists and authors to do what they want under Mongol rule.
• The capitol is a Persian city called Maraga, which becomes the center of Persian Islam during and after the Il-Khan era. It’s also a great intellectual center, and it has a great astrological observatory where a lot of discoveries are made. Also a place where the first world histories are written by Persian authors.
